It’s perhaps the fiercest rivalry in tennis history (or Agassi/Sampras?!). These two have brought the game to an audience far beyond tennis fans and just when many thought the rivalry had died, the two legends have slugged it out on the ATP World Tour since 2004 and their still at it. We’re talking, of course, about Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Of their 38 matches, Nadal currently holds a strong 25-15 advantage. Federer has a winning record on grass (2–1) and hard courts (10-9), while Nadal leads on clay (13–2) and the head-to-head of their 12 Grand Slam matches (9–3), with five of these wins on the clay courts of Roland Garros.

Since Federer return from injury they have played each other 6 times, Federer winning 5 of their matches (1 by walk over) And Nadal has only beaten him once – at the French Open this year.

Most notably, their 2008 Wimbledon final was lauded as the greatest match ever by many long-time tennis analysts.

The Final Of All Finals

Amidst rain delays, they played the longest final in Wimbledon history (4 hours and 48 minutes). Nadal captured the title by winning the fifth set in near darkness. This victory broke Federer’s Open Era-record 65 match winning streak on grass, which spanned more than five years.  It is arguably one of the greatest matches ever.

Career Grand Slam

As of July 2019, Roger Federer holds the all-time record for the most Grand Slam tournament titles with 20. Federer’s Grand Slam tournament titles include 11 on hard courts, 8 on grass, and 1 on clay.

Nadal has 19 in total: An incredible 12 on clay, 5 on hard courts, and 2 on grass. Both players have won a Career Grand Slam – winning each major title at least once.
