Top FIFA World Cup Goal Scorers

The 2022 FIFA World Cup has given us some big surprises so far and we’ve just started the knock out rounds.  The biggest sporting event in the world has already kicked out some top teams while some of the underdogs have really surprised.

Not including goal scored during penalty shoot outs, more than 2,000 goals have been scored in the 22 editions of the men’s football World Cup tournaments.  At every World Cup, legends are made, stars are born and heroes retire, and none are more celebrated than the top goal scorers,  below are top World Cup goal scorers, there are 10 football players who have scored 9 goals, and a few legends sitting at 10 goals each in World Cup appearances.  Here are the men who have scored 10 or more goals at the FIFA World Cup:

Grzegorz Lato – 10 Goals

The only Polish player to ever win the Golden Boot at a World Cup, Lato scored 10 goals over 20 matches in 1974, 1978 and 1982

Teofilo Cubillas – 10 Goals

The Peruvian great scored 10 goals in 13 matches over the 1970, 1978 and 1982 World Cups.

Thomas Muller – 10 Goals

2014 Silver boot winner and 2010 Golden Boot winner, the German man has scored 10 goals over 13 matches.  Muller also played at the 2018 World Cup in Russia

Gary Lineker – 10 Goals

Lineker scored 10 goals over 12 matches in the 1986 and 1990 World Cups, he is the only Englishman to have ever won the Golden Boot, doing so at the 1986 World Cup by scoring six goals.

Gabriel Batistuta – 10 Goals

The Argentinian became the first player ever to score a hat-trick in two World Cups – against Greece in ’94 and Jamaica in ’98.  He has scored 10 goals in 12 matches at the 1994, 1998 and 2002 World Cups.

Helmut Rahn – 10 Goals 

The German legend scored a total of 10 goals in 10 matches over 2 World Cups, 1954 and 1958.

Kylian Mbappe – 12

The Paris Saint-Germain forward is the Qatar 2022 Golden Boot winner World Cup with 8 gaols, and at only 23 he’s sure to by pass a lot of the below over the next few World Cups.  The French superstar also scored 4 goals at Russia 2018.

Lionel Messi – 13 Goals

We are adding the legend as he deserves a mention over the other 5 plus players who have scored 9 goals.  The age defying Argentinean has played 23 World Cup matches and counting, surpassing the late Diego Maradona for games played for his country in this tournament.

Jurgen Klinsmann – 11 Goals

This German legend breaks away from the above names with 11 goals over 17 matches at the 1990,1994 and 1998 World Cup.

Sandor Kocsis – 11 Goals

Hungarian, Kocsis holds the record with an average of 2.20 goals per game, he scored 11 goals in only 5 matches at the 1954 World Cup!

5. Pelé – 12 Goals

Pelé is known for being one of the greatest football players to ever play the game. He represented his native Brazil brilliantly in the World Cup’s from 1958 to 1970, where he smashed in 12 goals in 14 games.

4. Just Fontaine – 13 Goals

A goal machine in his time, Just Fontaine only ever played in one World Cup which was in 1958. He managed to score 13 goals in 6 games, a ration of over 2 goals per match. To this day, Just still maintains the record for the most goals scored at one FIFA World Cup tournament, a feat that seems near impossible to surpass.

3. Gerd Muller – 14 Goals

Gerd’s four goals in the 1970  tournament and his ten goals at the 1970 World Cup combined made him the all-time highest World Cup goalscorer at the time with 14 goals. This stood up until 2006, where Ronaldo from Brazil toppled Muller on German soil.

2. Ronaldo – 15 Goals

Scoring 98 times for his country with 15 coming in the World Cup, the “Brazilian” Ronaldo always showed up on the big occasions. He netted twice in the 2002 World Cup Final that proved good enough to defeat the Germans 2-0 in South Korea. To this day, he remains one of the true greats that ever touched a ball.

1. Miroslav Klose – 16 Goals

The Big German appeared in 4 World Cups. Many thought the 2010 World Cup would be his last and that he may never overcome Ronaldo as the all-time top World Cup Goalscorer. Klose overtook Brazil’s Ronaldo as the tournament’s all-time top scorer after scoring in Germany’s 7-1 semi-final defeat of hosts Brazil at the 2014 World Cup.

Despite his impressive impact at international level, Klose has never won a major trophy with Germany, picking up a World Cup runners-up medal in 2002 and third-place accolades in 2006 and 2010.

He retired after the tournament as Germany’s leading goalscorer with 71 goals in 136 games, he is also the only player to score at four World Cup finals.
