1. Decide on a date a time to start

So you’ve sown the seed and decided you want a change of lifestyle and want to get healthy and fit.  First step is to decide on a start date and then choose your method.  This can start with the basics – choose to be more active in everyday life, use the stairs instead of the lift, walk or cycle short distances rather than drive, get out and go for a walk at lunchtime, or choose an exercise that helps with fitness – baby steps!

2. Do something you enjoy

Doing a sport or exercises you dread is not the way forward and will not help motivate you, getting fit should be enjoyable.  Choose something you enjoy doing, if you have never done much then it’s time to experiment.  Try joining friends who might run, try swimming as an exercise, go to the gym or whatever else, maybe join a local club and once you find something you like then focus on that.  And for those looking for an easy way out, playing darts in the pub is not going to work!

 3 Get into a routine

Now that you have started, get into a routine from the baby steps to scheduling in your exercise.  Be determined to be more active in your everyday activities and stick to walking more etc.  Then try do your exercise, moderate or serious physical activity either daily or as often as possible.  You don’t have to kill yourself with over exercise but decide on your goal and work at it. You then need to stick to that routine so that when you skip it, you’ll miss it.

If you’re looking to shed a few pounds fast, do a higher-level intensity workout. For example, go on a walk at a brisk pace for an hour. Or even better run or play a sport that involved running.

Diet / Nutrition

A change in diet can make a big difference.  It’s  very important to cut cut down on sugary, junk food and eating too much processed food, if you eat high quantities of these foods then exercise will most likely have no effect

Fruits, vegetables and lean meats are the best thing to eat when getting into shape.  Also try eat foods with a decent amount of protein after each workout.  The protein will help keep your muscles, not fat, rebuilding.  And very importantly always stay hydrated.

The hardest part is getting started, the more you work at it, the easier and more enjoyable it becomes.   There is no better way to stay motivated than seeing results, so set goals and work at them.  If you get bored of the sport or exercise then try doing something different and enjoy it!
