Tokyo 2020 Preview

After the success and some controversy of the summer Olympic Games in Rio 2016, another Olympics is only a year away. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics will take place from 24th July to 9th August 2020 in Tokyo, Japan. This is the third time the Japanese capital has been awarded the games. And with a qualification now in play, the summer Olympics is now the first priority for every athlete out there.

 

New Sports!

Tokyo 2020 may just be the biggest sporting event ever and will see the introduction of additional disciplines within several of the Summer Olympics sports, including 3×3 basketball, freestyle BMX and Madison cycling. Also the sports of karate, sport climbing, surfing and skateboarding make their Olympic debuts, and baseball and softball (which were removed from the summer program after the 2008 games will see a return.

The Scale of Tokyo 2020

In total the 2020 Olympics will see 339 events in 33 different sports, encompassing 50 disciplines.

More than 11,000 athletes and 206 nations are expected to participate.

Work is underway on a new National Olympic Stadium, it’s being built on the site of the original 1964 Olympic Stadium and at a cost estimated at more than $1 billion.

Around 7.8 m million spectators are expected to buy tickets for the 2020 Games

Visa’s

Visitors from certain countries will be able to go to Japan for the summer 2020 Olympics without any form of visa. These visa-exempt countries include the US, Canada, all EU countries, Australia, and New Zealand.

Other nationalities currently need to obtain a travel visa, which normally requires going to an embassy or consulate.

Tickets

The opening ceremony tickets will range from 12,000 to 300,000 yen, with a maximum price of 130,000 yen for the finals of athletics. The average price of all the Olympic tickets is 7,700 yen. 50% of the tickets will be sold for 8,000 yen or less.

About 7.8 million tickets are available for the 2020 Games. Around 70 percent of tickets have traditionally gone to residents of the host country and that is also expected to be the case for the 2020 Games.

Most successful countries in medal wins

The USA has lead the medal tally for the summer Olympics for many years. The US has won a total of 2,520 medals, Russia is second with 1,865, Germany third with 1,681, Great Britain are fourth with 847 and France fifth with 713 medals. Norway lead the all time Winter Olympic medal count.
