The Prelude

Liverpool has more Champions League titles than any other British club and their return to the top flight of European football, has fans around the globe salivating at another chance to gain European silverware.  The revival at Liverpool football started with the appointment of manager Jürgen  Klopp in 2015.  The 2016/2017 season then became one of Liverpool’s finest performance in nearly seven years. The team pulled their weight throughout the season and had some spectacular battles against the top clubs. The Merseyside team ended up finishing fourth, ahead of Arsenal.  They finished forth again in 2017/18, but more importantly made it to the final of the Champions League, which is a massive feat for anEnglish club.  They lost to Real Madrid 3-0, but the writing was on the wall – Liverpool are back!

2018/19 Football Season

Last years title race was firmly between Liverpool and Man City but it was to be Man City who would seal the deal by and agonising one point above Liverpool.   Liverpool took solace in this defeat by claiming the Champions League title which is a bigger title than the Premier League by a long shot.

Liverpool are now by far the most successful English club in Champions League football with a 6 titles, which is double the second most successful club – Manchester United’s 3 titles.  With this form, bet predictions had Liverpool as favourites in betting odds before the season even started in 2019.

Premier League 2019/20

This season has been all about Liverpool, by February and after 20 games, they had an almost-perfect record of 19 wins and a draw – those two dropped points coming away at Manchester United in October.

Come April Liverpool were so far ahead of the rest of the table they had won the title.  Then Coronavirus happened, and the Premier League was indefinitely suspended and some doubted whether it would be completed this season.  Many thought Liverpool’s title hopes had been detailed once again.

Liverpool had their first game back (with no fans attending) against Everton on the 21st June which ended in a goal less draw, next up was Crystal Palace and Liverpool demolished them 4-0, this left Klopp’s side are 23 points clear at the top of the table having won a remarkable 28 of their 31 matches.  They only needed the second from the top – Man City to loose one game, to be confirmed champions, and that’s exactly what happened!

Champions League 2020

The decision to suspend the flagship club tournament was made in the middle of March, just before the round-of-16 stage was fully complete, and it was unclear for a number of months when action would resume.  Reigning champions, and 2020 Premier League winners Liverpool were of course eliminated in the last 16 by Atletico.

The Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica in Lisbon, Portugal, will stage the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League final on Sunday 23 August 2020.
