RAISING MONEY FOR ZAMBIA’S MEN’S AND LADIES TEAMS TO GET THEM TO THE COMPETITION

History has been made! On February 26th, 2017 the Zambian Men’s AND Zambian Ladies Hockey Teams became the first Zambian hockey teams in history to qualify for the African Cup for Nations Competition.

In February 2017 the men and women’s hockey teams of Zambia, traveled to Arusha, Tanzania to compete in the inaugural edition of the African Hockey Federation (AfHF) President’s Cup. The teams celebrated a historic double win and by this feat, both teams qualify to join the International Hockey Federation’s (FIH) top 7 ranked nations in Africa for the Africa Cup of Nations (ACN) Competition scheduled for South Africa in August 2017 – 18 to 27th August.

The ACN is the continent’s pre-eminent tournament with a history dating back to 1974 and a format dependent on the number of entries. Winning teams are guaranteed a place at the next Hockey World Cup or Olympics. South Africa has been the dominant force in recent years but the likes of Ghana, Egypt, and Kenya are mounting a serious challenge to their supremacy.

The Zambian Men’s and Ladies Teams are mostly made up of the players who made Zambia and the whole continent proud by qualifying and participating in the Youth Olympic Games held in Nanjing in China in 2014. The teams qualified for the Games by beating Namibia, Kenya, and Zimbabwe, all countries participating in the ACN. Zambia only narrowly lost to South Africa during the qualifiers. In Nanjing, the defending champion for boys, Germany, was beaten by Zambia!!

It is clear there is huge hockey talent in Zambia and the Men’s and Ladies team can pose a serious challenge to the other 7 African teams at the ACN.

The Zambian players are young less affluent individuals living in Lusaka around the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC). All but a few players learned to play hockey at OYDC. Some as recent as 3 years ago. The players are passionate about their sport and get great satisfaction from playing this wonderful game and just would love to compete on the highest international platform in Africa.

Your help in ultimately changing these young people’s lives, giving them a future in hockey and taking them away from bad vices such as theft and illicit sex, drugs and alcohol abuse will never be forgotten by Zambia Hockey Association and the entire hockey family at large.

Zambia Hockey Association has launched this hockey crowdfunding campaign to raise vital funds for the Zambian Men’s and Ladies Hockey Teams to travel to South Africa and to accommodate them while they compete in the Africa Cup of Nations.

ALL DONATIONS WILL BE TOWARDS TRAVEL & ACCOMMODATION & MEDICAL COSTS.
