Glencoe Mountain resort, Scotland’s oldest ski area established way back in 1956 is looking for your help to guarantee winter snow for future generations.
The dream is to be able to guarantee a set opening and closing date each year and have an area of guaranteed snow throughout the whole season. With your help we really can make that happen. Last season was the worst ski season on record with only 32 days skiing and even the skiing we had was what we in Scotland call agricultural. That’s code for there being lots of grass and mud mixed in with the snow.
What we want to do with your help is purchase a TechnoAlpin Snowfactory. These units make 100cubic meters of snow per day in temperatures of up to 25degrees and unlike our conventional snow cannons can operate in mild, wet and windy conditions.
The plan would be to turn the snow factory on in early November and build massive snow piles which would then be pushed out onto our new Coire Pollach ski run and sledging area for opening day on the 1st December.
The Snowfactory would then be used throughout the season to patch up runs where required and ensure we always had some great skiing and sledging available right through until the May bank holiday weekend.
Having an opening and closing date and being able to guarantee snow during the whole season would allow us to better support our local schools, clubs, athletes and provide a massively improved experience for you, all our amazing customers. It will also have an incredibly positive affect within the local economy, supporting local businesses during the winter which is typically a very tough trading period.
As well as having snow throughout the winter the Snowfactory would allow us to make snow for special events throughout the year such as summer sledging or an autumn rail jam.
A Snowfactory at Glencoe really could be a game changer for Scottish skiing. With your help we can make it happen.
+The Project FAQ's
When do you hope to have the SnowFactory on site?
TechnoAlpin currently have a unit reserved for us and as long as we place our order by October the unit will be delivered in November. It will be a tight timeline but we would hope to start making snow in November for a December opening.
Will you manage a 1st of December opening day this year?
Depends exactly when we get the unit onsite. If it arrives in early November then that is certainly possible. However being realistic it's likely that it will be later in December this year before we manage to make enough snow to be able to open. A very late delivery could mean that we only manage this year to use the unit to patch up runs and ensure snow into May. In future years our plan would be be to run the unit throughout November and target a 1st of December opening date.
What happens if we don't raise enough money?
We hope this won't be the case but if it is we would plan to roll the project over to next year, continue fundraising and pray for a good ski season which would then give us the money to make up any shortfall. Project would just be delayed by a year.
When will I get my supporters award?
The timeline for getting the unit up and running this year is going to be really tight so our focus I hope you understand will be on that. We will aim to get the rewards out to you as soon as possible but it is likely that we will have to wait until the spring to fit the branding and plaques to the Snowfactory as doing work like that in the winter would be pretty tough if not impossible. T-shirts expected to be available for the opening day and the website will be updated as soon as we receive all the supporter information.
Why don't you just buy or lease the SnowFactory?
Unfortunately after last years dreadful winter we aren't in a financial position to be able to buy a unit and unfortunately banks still aren't keen to support the ski industry. You really are our only option at the moment.
Won't the snow just melt as fast as you can make it?
While there will be a degree of melting, the snow from the Snowfactory is very condensed and is ejected at a temperature of -5degrees and stored in large piles which have a pretty good insulating quality. We will also use our own snow cannons to supplement the snow making process when the temperatures drop low enough. The main advantage with the Snowfactory unlike our conventional snow making is that it can operate in any weather including gale force winds, high temperatures and rain. It may not in the worst of conditions be able to do much more than make snow as fast as it's disappearing but in all the more benign periods of weather it will make gains. The technology is tested and proven in other similar environments like New Zealand where it has been a huge success. Once the snow is pushed out in December, early season snow which would normally melt on contact with warm ground will stick in the areas of man made snow further improving conditions.
What happens if we raise too much money?
Any extra funds raised will be used towards purchasing a second Snow Factory or additional snow cannons.
Can I just donate to the project without receiving a reward?
Yes, any support large or small will be massively appreciated and support can be given anonymously if you wish without receiving any reward. Just select that option on the payment page.

As well as that we will provide a large hyperlinked advert on the Glencoe Mountain webpage and provide as much recognition on Facebook as we can.
The unit is fully portable and has a sealed ammonium refrigeration unit. It uses about the same amount of water as a typical garden hose (1 liter per second) and will be run from our existing plateau cafe water system. The unit literally plugs in and is ready to go. It's similar to our current snow cannons but uses slightly more power and less water. For more technical specifications please go to https://www.technoalpin.com/en/snow-making/snowfactory.html
What are the costs of the unit?
Fully installed onsite the total cost for the TechnoAlpin snow factory is £460,000. We are currently looking to raise £320,000 towards that cost.
