US Open Preview and Favourites

On the tennis calendar there is no bigger event that a grand slam, a grand slam is how player success is heavily judged, and unless you win one you will never be considered a tennis great.

Grand Slams

Winners are awarded 2000 ATP points for a Grand Slam win.  Matches are best of 5 sets for men and 3 for ladies

Rafa Nadal holds the mens record with 22 Grand Slam singles titles.  Novak Djokovic is a close 2nd with 21 titles, while Roger Federer is 3rd with 20 grand slams.

In ladies tennis Serena Williams is closing on Margaret Court’s 24 titles with 23 Grand Slam wins.

Australian Open: A hardcourt tournament played in Melbourne Australia in mid January.  Prize money

French Open: Clay tournament played at Roland Garros, Paris in late May – early June

Wimbledon:  The oldest and only major tennis tournament left that’s played on grass and considered the most prestigious tennis event in the world.  It’s played in Wimbledon, London in late June – early July.

US Open: Played in the hardcourts of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre, Flushing Meadows, New York in late August – early September.

The US Open

So far this year Nadal has won the first two grand slams while Djokovic won Wimbledon, this leaves only the US Open left to compete for.  Now let’s go through a run down of player who have a chance of winning the last grand slam on the calendar.

Rafa Nadal

The 36 year old spaniard had to withdraw from Wimbledon semi finals due to injury but he is arguably in the form of his life.  He started 2022 by winning the Australian Open, then straight after won the Mexican Open.  He was also the French Open winner and was through to the semi finals with a chance of winning Wimbledon before injury ruled him out.

Rafa is our top pick to win the US Open, his performance ion Hard Court this year has been exceptional so far and he is highly motivated to bridge the gap between himself and Djokovic.

Novak Djokovic

If anyone is able to stop Rafa, it’s this man.  The Serb was shrouded in controversy earlier this year but has brushed this and a French Open final loss to Nadal off in style to win Wimbledon.  He is highly motivated to chase Rafa’s 22 grand slam title and become the greatest.

His form is improving as the year goes on and there is no more dangerous player on hardcourt.  He has won the US Open 3 times (2011, 2015, 2018), and should be the bookies joint favourite to win it again this year.

Carlos Alcaraz

Alcraz blasted on to the tennis world at the 2021 US Open when he beat Tsitsipas.  Fast forward to 2022 and he is number 7 in the world and has won 4 titles already this year – Madrid Masters, Barcelona Open, Rio Open and the Miami Masters.

Alcaraz is just as dangerous on hard as he is on clay.   While his grass court performance was disappointing, he is in a hurry to win his first slam and we think the US Open could be the one.  His impeccable hardcourt game and the fact that he has already beaten Djokovic and Nadal this year earns him our third favourite spot.

The Others

The rest of the top 10 are very mixed.  Given Tsitsipas’s 2022 performance we don’t rate him as having much of a chance to make it past the quarter finals.  Zverev is out injured while Medvedev hasn’t competed much this year.

The other best new generation players Casper Rudd and especially Jannik Sinner may have shot at their first grand slam gold.  Or else try your luck 50 free spins ohne einzahlung
