Premier League – The season so far

The Premier League season this year is possibly the most talked about early season ever, but mainly because of one superstar, but we’ll get to that later.  Let’s look at the league so far and then we’ll discuss the favourites and some ggbet outsiders.

2023 Premier League Calendar

The Premier League season started on 6 August and will end 28th May 2023.  The season has been adjusted this year to accommodate the FIFA World Cup, which will take place in the middle of the domestic calendar.  The FIFA World Cup starts 2nd November and will conclude on 18th December, but the Premier League won’t resume until 26th December.

The outsiders

The big surprise this season are Arsenal and Newcastle United.  Let’s start with Arsenal,  while it’s only early in the season, they have come out all guns blazing and top the table with one loss and one draw after 12 games.  The Gunners new recruits – Oleksandr Zinchenko, Gabriel Jesus and Fabio Vieira have all proven great investments so far.

Newcastle are the other big surprise and they now lead the Premier League table, their last six game resulted in five wins and one draw giving  16 points from a possible 18.  Newcastle United have become a different team this season and have a number of Champions League quality players in their stable.

Ronaldo

The worlds biggest superstar has been capturing a lot of Premier League headlines and not necessarily for the right reasons.  His much celebrated return to Man United in 2021 is well and truly over.   Gone is the special treatment he may have been rewarded in the past, and he’s spend a lot of this season on the bench.  It’s clear neither he or boss Erik ten Hag are happy and this has been evident since the start of the 2022 PL.  This was compounded when Ronaldo stormed down the tunnel at Old Trafford after Manchester United’s victory over Tottenham, resulting in Hag cutting Ronaldo for the next game against Chelsea.  We don’t expect Ronaldo to last the full season with Man U.

Premier League title favourites

Liverpool were a front runner coming into this season, but a terrible start to the may hamper this, they have only won 4 games out of 12 and now sit way down the table at 9th place.  They have dropped down to 5th favourites for the 2023 title.

Last years Premier League winners Manchester City still sit as the clear favourites and Guardiola’s side are priced to hold on to the Cup..  Arsenal are the big shock as they have moved up to second favourites, followed my Manchester Untitled, then Chelsea.

Tottenham Hotspurs have just won Group D in Champions League, making it through to the last 16, and Spurs are having a decent run in their home league too.  They are reportedly trying sign Atalanta’s Ruslan Malinovskyi to beef up their midfield.  The London club have now won 8 out of 13 games and are sitting third place in the league as well as third favourite.

Manchester United are sitting in 5th so still have a chance, maybe clearing up the current Ronald saga will help the team move forward.   The most successful Premier League team ever have had no success in recent years and we wouldn’t be backing them this year either

Chelsea are not exactly lighting up the PL but Graham Potter still seems very bullish on his teams chances of silverware.

There are only 12/13 out of 38 games played so the league is still wide open, we think Newcastle are the best outsider to back, but if you want to play safe then your choice has to be Man City.
